Making steel from iron is the secondary refining process also known as secondary metallurgy. Steel producers are increasingly manufacturing high-carbon and low-carbon, structural, special alloyed and mechanical steel qualities, which have high requirements of resistance, strength and purity. Inferior quality of raw materials increases process difficulties due to the presence of harmful residual elements such as sulfur, phosphorous, hydrogen, non-metallic inclusion of SiO2 and Al2O3, amongst others.
These impurities can be treated and even removed using SKW’s product portfolio for secondary metallurgy, Cored Wires and Slag Conditioners.
The application of these products comprises precise technical diagnosis, using state-of-the-art computer modelling and empiric data from in-situational use as well as follow-up by our highly qualified technicians to ensure optimum results and customer satisfaction.
Cored WireWire injection using Affival cored wire is the best cost-effective process for in-ladle treatment. The cored wire is made of a low carbon steel sheath into which the powdered minerals, metals and ferro alloys are tightly encased. With the PapCal® technology, for example, the calcium in the wire is protected in a “sandwich casing” which delays the heat transfer from liquid steel. The casing is made of an inner steel strip covered by a paper insulation and an outside steel casing. The insulation allows a deeper penetration of calcium into liquid steel which gives longer reaction time and higher and consistent recovery. The cored wires can cointain any of the following:
Inclusion Shape Control
This includes all Calcium-bearing cored wires (powder and solid) such as PapCal®, Calcium HDx ™, Caltech, CaSi, CaFe and CaAlFe.
Addition and trimming
This includes all addition of metals and ferro-alloys such as Titanium sponge, FeTi FeB, FeV, FeNb, FeMn, FeMo and Carbon.
This includes Nitrogen-bearing cored wire. It is used in the steelmaking for controlled nitride formations.
This includes Sulfur, Fe, Lead, Bismuth, BiMn, Tellurium, FeTeMn. The addition of these elements improves the machinability by forming specific and complex inclusions.
This includes special metals and alloys such as Rare Earths (Ce, La, Nd) and Zirconium for highly specialized and customized applications to attain particular steel properties.
Granular De-Oxidizing, Desulfurizing, Conditioning and Shape Control Products
The chemistry of briquettes for secondary metallurgy applications has no real limit. Aluminum contents of 90% or higher are often used to kill steel; lower Aluminum content to kill slag for desulfurization or to improve alloy recovery. Briquettes using hi calcium or dolomitic lime, and fluxes can be used for basic slag conditioning.
Blended Granular Synthetic Slags
Custom blended products are available to suit your typical slag chemistry and within the constraints of your steel grade chemistry. These products can contain combinations of aluminum, calcium aluminate, high calcium and/or dolomitic lime to achieve your deoxidizing, desulfurizing, or slag conditioning needs. This includes Granular Lime on its own.
Sintered Synthetic Slags
The next generation of custom blended products, containing aluminum, calcium aluminate, calcium silicate fluorspar, high calcium and dolomitic lime, agglomerated in a sintering process, which provides better product handling, precise melting points, lower energy consumption and no hydrogen pickup for best quality steel grade.
